Facilitators
FOR has trained facilitators
in various parts of the country. We will try to match you up with
skilled facilitators who live near you. Organizers must pay all
travel expenses as well as housing and meals for facilitators during
the workshop. In addition, facilitators should be paid a stipend
to compensate them for their time in preparation and training and
their expenses. FOR facilitators always work in pairs, never alone.
Note: FOR facilitators have usually participated in basic training
and facilitator training at their own expense, they continue to
invest in resources and materials to assist them to improve the
quality of the training they are doing. FOR requests that all facilitators
be justly compensated for the valuable service they provide.
Materials
Resources used for this training
are the "From Violence to Wholeness" Manual published
by Pace e Bene and the FOR training packet. The cost of these are
$22 for each set plus mailing and they are available through the
FOR bookstore. Organizers should contact the bookstore directly
a few weeks before the training date to order enough manuals and
packets for all participants. Call them at 845-358-4601 or email
to
. Participants should have the resources before the training date
to allow them to be familiar with the content.
Location
Organizers are responsible
for arranging meeting space, and if necessary living space, for
the duration of the workshop. A good local setting will be one that
provides a retreat type environment, minimal distractions, opportunities
for individual quiet reflection, and space for small groups to work
together. The main meeting room must have moveable furniture and
be large enough to comfortably fit all participants seated in a
single circle. Ideally, there will also be a number of smaller rooms
available or (weather permitting) space outdoors for small group
work.
For long weekend trainings many groups find it convenient and beneficial
to have participants stay overnight at the workshop location. This
allows participants to be more relaxed and focused during the training
and provides additional processing time individually and in informal
groups outside of scheduled time. Should you choose this option,
please ensure that participants will have quiet and private space
for rest and individual reflection during "down times"
in the training.
Meals
You may choose to ask participants
to bring meals and snacks themselves or to include them as part
of the training cost. If participants are staying at the workshop
location sufficient quantity and quality meals and snacks should
be provided. Eating a meal together can be a valuable part of the
training as it builds community and provides opportunities for informal
discussion and processing of material.
Advertising
Local organizers work to promote
and publicize the training in their area. This is not a Facilitators
responsibility. If given enough notice, FOR will put your training
on our nationwide schedule that is posted on our website, published
in Fellowship magazine (must be 2-4 months in advance) and distributed
widely to faith communities, peace and justice groups and those
who express an interest in participating in nonviolence training.
We encourage you to contact peace and justice groups and faith communities
near you to invite their members to participate.
Money
Cost
to participants can vary greatly depending on local costs for facility
rentals, meals, etc. and on whether organizers decide to provide
housing and meals for participants. We suggest that you take some
time to calculate what your total costs will be before deciding
what to charge participants. To assist you we have created an expense
worksheet that you can print out and fill in. To make training
affordable and available to more people, FOR encourages groups to
use a sliding scale or to offer scholarships paid for by special
donation. You are also encouraged to do fundraising and ask for
donations of money, food, materials and facilities from faith communities,
peace and justice groups, nonprofits, town council, local businesses,
schools, civic groups etc.
Additional
Organizer Responsibilities
Take some time to review the
Organizer section of the Organizer-Facilitator
Agreement to see other responsibilities of an organizer. As
well as the responsibilities listed above, organizers provide certain
other materials and resources, register participants, respond to
inquiries, handle money associated with the program and determine
the cost to participants.
